Professor Gauthier completed his medical studies at the Université de Montréal and pursued specialty training in Neurology at the McGill University, followed by a Medical Research Council of Canada Fellowship in Neurochemistry at Professor Ted Sourkes' laboratory.
Serge is the Director of the Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders Research Unit of the McGill Center for Studies in Aging and Professor in the Departments of Neurology & Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, and Medicine at McGill University. He was the Research Chair for Canadian Institutes for Health Research for five years. Some of his special interests include consensus approach to the management of dementia in different stages, the ethics of research involving persons with dementia, and primary prevention strategies against cognitive decline and dementia. He was one of the joint recipients of the Gallen Award and the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology Innovations Award with Prof. Remi Quirion.
Prof. Gauthier was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2014 and the Ordre National du Québec in 2017 for his contributions to advancing our understanding of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and for fostering the development of research networks.
